“Children who have not asked to be born are entitled to a home”
When Maria Lopez Michelsen founded La Casa de la Madre y el Niño in 1942, it was difficult to imagine that her work would continue from generation to generation and that is would set an example in Colombia and the rest of the world regarding how to bring adoptive parents together with a child , how to reach out to pregnant mothers and how to protect vulnerable children. La Casa, as is familiarly known, was the first private institution in Colombia dedicated to this kind of work. In fact, it was founded thirty-one years before the ICBF (the Colombian Family Welfare Institute), the public entity in charge of children in Colombia.
At La Casa we work tirelessly, overcoming many difficulties in order to achieve the satisfaction of finding children for suitable parents and parents for children in need of a family. The adoption process brings benefits to all those involved. The biological mother who gives up her child is fulfilling her duty through the hands of the adoptive parents. For the adoptive parents wanting to have a child adoption means the fulfillment of a dream. For a child involved in this process this means the chance of being welcomed into a loving family. Without doubt, being adopted is being a truly desired son or daughter. Adoption means courage, generosity, will and determination for mothers who choose to sacrifice themselves for the well being of their offspring. The images of smiles of about 9000 children from La Casa who are now around the world show this. The walls of the institution are covered with pictures of children that show the happy faces of those who have known the security of a home where they have found the love and warmth they are entitled to. La Casa is an institution that lives off the generosity of its benefactors. Just as more than 9,000 children enjoy today the warmth of a home we believe that thousands more children should have the same right. This is why we continue working with dedication and professionalism and try to improve every day. Our very high standards have now been certified by the quality management system ISO9001-2000 in August 2008. In this way we continue to strengthen the structure of the institution and face the challenges ahead in the assurance that our service is the best that we can deliver. Finally, this website highlights our mission and can be summarized, in short, as being a bridge between the love of parents and children that would not have otherwise been possible. I take this opportunity to extend on behalf of everyone at La Casa and especially our children our many thanks to our sponsors and to all those people whose support we have received. Without them, our joyful duty would not be possible. I can only hope we can keep counting on you in the future.
